YEAR-END GIVING
With the end of the year comes the holiday season – a time to express appreciation and love for family and friends. It is also the time to evaluate and make plans for your year-end giving. Making a charitable gift at year-end can benefit not only the causes you believe in, but your bottom-line as well. Even as you help improve the lives of others, you can give in ways that maximize tax advantages and preserve your financial resources. Here are a just a few options –

  • Cash Gifts written and dated on or before Dec. 31, qualify as a current year’s deduction. If you are mailing a check to the Newton YMCA, be sure to have the envelope postmarked by December 31.
  • Gift of Stock presents a unique opportunity to make a gift to the Newton YMCA, as well as a tax deduction on the gain value.  Donating appreciated stock results in an income tax deduction based on the fair market value of the stock at the time of the gift.  In addition, capital gains taxes that would otherwise be owed on the sale of stock are avoided.  Again, the gift of stock should be received at the Newton YMCA by December 31.  For convenience, your stockbroker can arrange for a year-end gift-transfer of stock from your account to ours.  Call us at 792-4006 for more information on this option.
  • Gifts of Real Estate may be a good choice should you own a residence, second home, vacation home, farm or raw land that has increased in value so much over the years that a sale would mean a sizeable capital gains tax.  Similar to stock, by donating real estate to the Newton y, you avoid the capital gains tax on the appreciation in value plus receive a charitable deduction for the fair market value of the property.  You can even make a gift of your residence or second home that allows you to continue to use the property for your lifetime and still receive an income tax deduction in this calendar year.
  • Gifts of Life Insurance policies which are no longer needed can provide a year-end income tax deduction, if donated to the Newton YMCA.  To receive the deduction, you must designate the Newton YMCA as both the owner and beneficiary of the policy.  Or you can maintain ownership of the policy but designate the Newton YMCA as beneficiary of the policy.  You retain full control of the policy during your lifetime and the Newton YMCA will receive the insurance proceeds at your death.  You will not be able to receive a charitable income tax deduction for this future gift, but you will receive an estate tax charitable deduction.

If you would like to discuss any of these year-end giving options with us, we would love to hear from you. Simply contact us at (641) 792-4006 and ask to speak with either Tom Vanderlaan (Executive Director) or Frank Buckley (Director of Business Development).
