Swim Lessons

The goal of Newton YMCA Swim Lessons is for everyone to have a fun, positive experience. YMCA Swim Lessons are taught by trained instructors. Please note that on the first day of class, children should be dressed in their swimsuits and ready to swim. Any child who has a cold, fever, diarrhea, or ear infection should not attend class.

:: Preschool Lessons ::
Classes will meet twice weekly for three weeks
Session I: June 4-22Session II: July 9-27Session III: July 30-Aug. 10
Fees: $19 Y member; $50 Non-member
Who: Children 3 to 5 years old

Pike:
Pike is designed for beginning swimmers. Basic paddle stroke and kicking skills, pool safety, and comfort in the water are the focus.
When: 10:50-11:20 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday;
10:50-11:20 a.m. Monday and Wednesday;
6:15-6:45 p.m. Monday and Thursday;
7:25-7:55 p.m. Monday and Thursday

Eel:
Eel is for the swimmer who will put his/her face in the water and is able to kick and float with a flotation device. Participants are taught the paddle stroke and are beginning to swim without a flotation device.
When: 11:25-11:55 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday;
11:25-11:55 a.m. Monday and Wednesday;
6:50-7:20 p.m. Monday and Thursday

Ray/Starfish:
At this level, participants review previous skills, improve stroke skills, learn more about personal safety and rescue skills, and build endurance.
When: 11:25-11:55 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday;
11:25-11:55 a.m. Monday and Wednesday;
6:50-7:20 p.m. Monday and Thursday

:: Youth Swim Programs ::
This program consists of five main components: personal growth, personal safety, stroke development, water sports and games, and basic rescue skills. Each skill level builds on the preceding level, with six levels covering all the strokes, diving fundamentals, and safety skills

Who: Children 6 years of age and older

Polliwog:
This is the beginning level for school age children. Children become acquainted with the pool, the use of instructional flotation devices, and floating. By the end of this level, participants should know the front crawl and backstroke and introduced to the elementary backstroke. Children should be able to swim 15 feet without assistance at completion of this level.
When: 10:50-11:20 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday;
10:50-11:20 a.m. Monday
and Wednesday;
6:15-6:45 p.m. Monday and Thursday;
7:25-7:55 p.m. Monday and Thursday

Guppy:
In this level, children continue to practice and build upon basic skills. Swimmers are introduced to lead-up strokes to sidestroke and breaststroke, and learn rotary breathing. Some diving skills are also taught. To pass to the next level, participants must be able to swim the length of the pool without assistance.
When: 10:50-11:35 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday;
10:50-11:35 a.m. Monday and Wednesday;
6:15-7 p.m. Monday and Thursday

Minnow:
This is the intermediate level swimmers. Children begin to improve the strokes they have learned as their skills become more refined. They learn more diving skills, personal safety and rescue, and improve stroke technique.
When: 10:50-11:35 a.m. Monday and Wednesday;
7-7:45 p.m. Monday and Thursday

Fish/Flying Fish:
At this level, participants continue improvement on front crawl, elementary backstroke, backstroke and sidestroke. They are introduced to the butterfly stroke and open turns. Swimmers continue learning diving skills, personal safety and rescue skills, and new water sports and games. Participants in Flying Fish are introduced to competitive stroke techniques. Opportunities are provided for further work on personal safety and rescue skills.

When: 10-10:45 a.m. Wednesday and Friday

:: Parent/Child Swim Lessons ::
The objective of this program is to get both the parent and child comfortable in the water. In these 30 minute classes, the child will become aware of the differences between moving through water and on dry land while parents learn how to teach their child how to be safer in and around the water.

Who: Children ages 6 months to 36 months old

When: 10-10:30 a.m. Wednesday and Friday
Fees: $14 Y member; $40 Non-member

:: Private Lessons ::
Private lessons are a 30 minute one-on-one instruction available by appointment for youth and adults. Complete a request form at the main desk, and you will be contacted by an instructor. The availability of private lessons is not guaranteed because it is based on instruction and pool availability.
Fees: $20 Y member; $50 Non-member for 1/2 hour of private lessons

:: Outlying Community Swim Lessons ::
Lessons, gym games, and arts and crafts offered to youth in Baxter.
When: June 4-16

:: SPLASH ::
A one week learn to swim program for nonmembers designed as an introduction to YMCA swim lessons.
Who: Children 6-12 years old who are non-members
When: May 14-18 at 6:15-6:45 p.m. or 6:50-7:20 p.m. or 7:25-7:55 p.m.
Fees: $5
Registration is required. Forms are available at front desk
